These songs don't fit easily into regular categories. To say they are for children is true; but they are for everyone. The musical 'genre' is varied too, with roots in folk, blues, rockn'roll, jazz, country, classical, Hebrew...but all were conceived on the guitar. In February 2009 our daughter, Hannah, and I travelled to the US to record 19 of these songs with some fine musicians: Rebekah, eldest daughter and freelance violinist working in the Chicago area, bringing her own classical and celtic input to songs she has known from early years; Tim Mulvenna, most creative percussionist and pivotal in this production; James Falzone adding a touch of jazz and Hebrew clarinet, and some haunting improvisations on the tin whistles; Cathy Kuna's cello ranging from rich bass to seagulls and shooting stars; with Josh Richter engineering the whole thing with energy, ingenuity and infinite patience. It was a great time, making the music together, with the snow piled high outside the studio in Barrington, just north of Chicago. I started writing these songs when our own children were young. The earliest were written on scraps of paper during the long hours of stoking the wood-fired kiln in my pottery studio. Now years have passed, and so has the pottery. The songwriting has carried on. I've sung the songs with many children around the world - mostly, till now, in the UK, sometimes in the USA and Romania...songs about the love of God, the beauty of creation, the miracles and parables of Jesus, psalms and prayers...enjoying the wonder of God with them. Just as a good children's book can be as much for adults as for children, this album is for everyone, especially children, regardless of your age last birthday. I'm not sure when a child becomes a grown-up. While it is an important transition, there are aspects of being a child that Jesus says are vital: 'Unless you become like a child...' When a child tells you that you are a child on the inside you can take it as a compliment. These are songs about God. From a passion that the Christian Faith is alive and real, songs that want to give everyone a fresh look at the Bible, songs about God who gives his creation to us and Jesus who gives himself for us. Here are a few of them, recorded in the hope that many will be able to enjoy them and be encouraged to know this amazing God. There are many more songs where these came from. I look forward, very much, to recording them too.
