Jennie Avila sings popular and original songs with a warm and playful presence. She accompanies herself with acoustic guitar, conga drum, and exotic percussion, (including a Japanese kokirikko that looks and sounds like a snake vertebrae). Audience participation is encouraged ... expect to move like a tree, make animal calls, and even write a song together. Jam along with Jennie on mini-shakers and learn about dynamics. Jennie Avila has appeared nationally in schools, coffeehouses, library residencies, and festivals. She has performed on stage with Pete Seeger, Trout Fishing In America, and John Flynn. Her song, "The Spider and The Butterfly", was included on the WXPN Kids Corner compilation entitled "Live and in Curlers". Jennie has been a Wolf Trap Teaching Artist since Fall 2006, as well as a returning songwriting instructor for Young Writers Day, PA, and the New Jersey Teen Arts Fest. Her trio, Hot Soup, won the 2005 Wammy for Best Children's Music Performers. Jennie Avila is a Smithsonian Fast Folk Artist. Recently, she was invited to join the Board of The Discovery Station in Hagerstown, Maryland, as music consultant. Watch out for Jennie's wild birdcalls! "My personal favorite is 'The Tofu Song' which rocks around the joys of soybeans!" Kathy O'Connell (WXPN Kids Corner), Metro Kids, Philadelphia, PA "Whether she's writing about animals, the environment, friends, or a big tofu, Avila captures kids' imaginations without talking down to them..." Tammy Paolino, Best Bet South Jersey, Courier-Post, Cherry Hill, NJ.
