When I set about to make my second album for families, I wanted to include the songs of mine that my students at PS 230, Brooklyn responded to the best. I've always enjoyed music with a lot of drive, combined with interesting, varied arrangements. A memorable melody is also important to me. Here I'm sharing songs that I've found really reach the imaginations of kids -- my students have asked to hear these selections over and over again over the years. Check out 'They Said It Wasn't True', for example. You might be amused to learn that the 3rd grade performed this at our Spring Concert one year. When I play 'I Was Lost, But Now I'm Found', the kids pair up, one pretending to be the real child, the other one a 'reflection'. It's interesting to try to figure out which one is which without asking them. I hope I can be forgiven for taking pride in the lyric for 'Elephant's Memory': 'He remembers the day he was born like it was yesterday/As long as he lives he'll never forget the first time he saw his mom/How surprised his Daddy was'. I tried to write a good country song with 'The Homework-Eating Dog Named Rover' and 'If I Didn't Have A Teddy Bear'. 'Rover' has already gotten some radio airplay in such diverse locales as Princeton, NJ, and Chattanooga, TN. I invite you to give my version of the 'truth' a try. Here's what some folks have said about 'Every Word I Say Is True': Warren Truitt, Children's librarian at the New York Public Library: '...the best roots rock/country soundtrack you'll ever hear on a children's album...a veritable feast of lyrics...' Bill Childs, host of 'Spare The Rock, Spoil The Child' on Valley Free Radio, Florence, MA (in a radio interview) '...your lyrics are as interesting as anything out there in family music today...' Jem Aswad, writing in 'Time Out New York Kids' said: '...Schorr prides himself in writing songs that will appeal to listeners of all ages, and with 'Every Word I Say Is True', he has done just that...Schorr's entertaining songs just won't let go.' (If you like what you hear, you might also want to check out my first album, 'Monsters Are Absolutely Not To Be Trusted'. It's available digitally on iTunes, Napster, etc.) All the best, Dan friendlyblobs.com.
